McDonald’s eröffnet kleinste Filiale der Welt – für Bienen

Man muss McDonald’s nicht mögen, aber diese Idee ist charmant. Bleiben trotzdem tonnenweise Müll und ungesundes Essen, ich weiß. Trotzdem.

Some of McDonald’s restaurants in Sweden have beehives on their rooftops. The initiative started out locally but is now growing. More franchisees around the country are joining the cause and have also started replacing the grass around their restaurants with flowers and plants that are important for the wellbeing of wild bees.

Bienen, die in Blüten schlafen

Der Natur-Fotograf Joe Neely hat neulich eher zufällig zwei Bienen dabei beobachtet, wie die sich in eine Blüte betteten und – na klar – die Kamera gezückt. Und diese Bienenart schläft wohl ganz gerne mal in Blüten. Voll schön.

“Wel,l I never knew that bees slept in flowers but as it turns out these bees (Diadasia diminuta) sleep in the orange flowers called Globe Mallows.” The Diadasia diminuta – or simply the globe mallow bee – collects pollen from its favorite food plant, globe mallow (Sphaeralcea). According to Forest Service at the United States Department of Agriculture, their nests are commonly found in partially compacted soil along the margins of dirt roads in the western United States. The globe mallow bees play a major role in the flower’s reproduction. “The bees become covered with pollen visiting the flowers [and] most of this pollen is groomed into the pollen basket on the hind legs and taken back to the nest,” the organization writes on its website. “However, some remains on the body and is deposited on the stigma of each of the next few globe mallow flowers visited. Thus, Diadasia contributes to globe mallow reproduction.

Eine Teekanne aus Bienenwaben

Der Designer Tomáš Gabzdil Libertíny und 60000 Bienen des holländischen Imkers Johan Beckers haben gemeinsam diese Teekanne aus Bienenwaben gebaut. Libertíny hat wohl ein Drahtgestell gebastelt, den Rest haben die Bienen dazu beigetragen. Der Name für die semi-natürlich geformte Skulptur ist „Thousand Years„, wie lange die Erschaffung tatsächlich gedauert hat, wird nicht ganz klar.

I have been always amazed by the power of nature and its epic force that drives forward slowly but steadily. The ‘made by bees’ project allowed me to plug in to this source and guide it to create a mythology as well as a proposal. The title of the work ‘Thousand Years’ is not only reflecting the amazing materials properties—beeswax can literally last thousands of years—but also the scale of human life in the face of the apparent eternity of the universe.

Einen Bienenstock zum Honig Zapfen

Stuart und Cedar Anderson tüfteln schon seit Jahrzehnten an einem Bienenstockbehälter, der den von den Bewohnern produzierten Honig schlicht herauslaufen lässt. Jetzt ist dieser fertig und trägt den Namen Flow Hive. So bedarf es keinen Imker mehr und die Bienen haben auch ihre Ruhe.

Und was ich schon immer wissen wollte: Essen Veganer eigentlich Honig? Erstgemeinte Frage.
